Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is a cationic polymeric biocide. Its cationic nature allows it to electrostatically bond with the negatively charged cell walls of algae, disrupting and killing the algal cells.

Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is used as a bactericide and algaecide.

Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is a water-soluble cationic polymer with good stability. It is insensitive to pH and temperature, exhibits chlorine resistance, and withstands high temperatures, high pressures, and high shear rates. Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is non-foaming, odorless, non-toxic, safe to use, and does not harm the human body. It can be used in acidic, alkaline, and hard water environments.

Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) can be used as a biocide in water bodies such as swimming pools, landscape water features, and industrial circulating water systems. In industrial cooling water and swimming pool water, Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is commonly used as an algaecide. It demonstrates excellent killing and inhibitory effects on both planktonic and sessile algae, and also functions as a biodispersant and clarifying agent. In industrial cooling circulating water, it is recommended to use Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) in synergy with bromochloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin to achieve the desired effect at very low dosages. In swimming pools, it can kill algae, control algal regrowth, and inhibit green algae production. In water bodies like swimming pools and landscape water features, Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) is specifically used to kill and inhibit the growth of various bacteria and algae. Its persistent biocidal properties help eliminate existing microorganisms, while routine maintenance dosages can inhibit their regrowth. It is particularly suitable for maintaining swimming pools during the off-season (or early summer), protecting them from various bacterial and algal infestations. In landscape water, it can prevent and control algal blooms.

Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) can be used as a clay swelling inhibitor and viscosifier in oilfield water injection operations. When used in conjunction with ammonium chloride, it provides better stabilization of clay minerals and can also serve as a shale inhibitor in cationic drilling fluids.

As a strongly cationic polymer, Poly(2-hydroxypropyldimethylammonium chloride) can also be used for antifogging and antistatic treatments on glass surfaces, to eliminate static electricity from synthetic fibers, silk, wool, and as a retention aid for food-grade paper.
