DL-Pipecolinic acid (PA), is an important rigid cyclic non-protein amino acid that is used in the preparation of many chiral drugs and biologically active substances as it can both define the conformation of peptides and act as a versatile backbone in the synthesis of libraries of different compounds. For example, the new generation of local anaesthetics Ropivacaine, the antipsychotic Thioridazine, the immunosuppressant Rapamycin and the antitumour antibiotic Sandramycin are all made from hexahydropyridine-alpha-carboxylic acid or its derivatives.
